Science: Statement of Intent

Science at Oakway Academy aims to develop a practical and engaging high-quality curriculum that inspires our learners. We ensure that Working Scientifically skills are built on and developed through the different types of scientific enquiry, to enable children to answer scientific questions about the world around them. Children reflect on their new learning and articulate their understanding using scientific vocabulary in order to explain concepts confidently and to continue to ask questions and be curious about their surroundings.

Pupils in the Early Years will work towards achieving the Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Early Learning Goals to ensure they are ready and prepared to access KS1 Science. We aim for them to achieve this by supporting them to:

  • Explore the natural world around them, making observations and drawing pictures of animals and plants

  •  Know some similarities and differences between the natural world around them and contrasting environments, drawing on their experiences and what has been read in class;

  • Understand some important processes and changes in the natural world around them, including the seasons and changing states of matter.

Pupils in Key Stage 1 and 2 will follow the aims of the national curriculum for Science to ensure they:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics

  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them

  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.
