Music: Statement of Intent

At Oakway Academy, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through: listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing. This is done across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres in order to deliver the aims of the National Curriculum. Our Curriculum allows the children to increase their resilience, curiosity and aspirations as they face the challenges of learning to play instruments and in composing music for themselves and others. We aim to provide all children with an unbiased respect for the role that music may play in their individual lives and in a variety of cultures beyond their immediate experience, enhancing their cultural capital. We are committed to ensuring all children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community and aspire to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.
