It is our intention that pupils develop expertise as they progress through the curriculum, accumulating and connecting substantive and disciplinary geographical knowledge.

Pupils in the Early Years will work towards achieving the Knowledge and Understanding of the World, Early Learning Goals to ensure they are ready and prepared to access KS1 geography. We aim for them to achieve this by supporting them to:

• Show curiosity about the world around them by exploring and talking about their observations of how things work and changes they notice (plants, humans/animals, seasons/weather)
• Understand how to read and draw a simple map
• Talk about similarities and differences between where we live and places around the world

Pupils in KS1 and KS2 will follow the aims of the national curriculum for geography to ensure they:

• Develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
• Understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
• Are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
• Collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
• Interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
• Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
